As the school year starts, athletes will begin their fall sports. Like many other sports, cross country boys and girls have been hard at training since the summer began.
Heather Ott, girls' head cross country coach; and Jeff Gaither, assistant coach, have as their motto: “The will to win is nothing without the will to prepare.” Coach Ott has been the head varsity girls' coach since 1990, with experience in coaching swimming, soccer, and JV cross country before that. Assistant coach Gaither has been coaching since 1988, with experience at Darlington and Girls Preparatory School. The fast, fearless, females recently returned from Camp Lake Ocoee for their annual girls cross country camp, where the team got a head start to training as a team, along with getting to know one another and enjoying lots of fun activities.
The boys' cross country team gets together a few days a week to run. Head Coach Bill Gautier has been coaching boys' cross country for 38 years; five being at Baylor. Alongside coach Gautier is assistant coach Jan Gautier. Together, they are more than excited to bring the boys a wonderful season in hopes of returning to state in November.
Athletes from the girls' and boys’ teams have varying answers in response to “What are you most and excited and nervous for about the upcoming season?” Sophomore Garrison Corley says he is “excited to get back in shape but nervous about racing.” Junior Helen Webb says she is “excited for this years team because I think we will be really strong, especially with a bunch of new freshman.”
Both teams are excited for the season to start and racing to begin. The Baylor coaches will make sure these athletes succeed to their own personal goals and team goals as a whole.
