The Color Purple Found Poem
Ellie Tomisek

257: “My skin dark. My nose just a nose. My lips just lips… Even thought you had the trees with you. The whole earth. The stars. But look at you. When Shug left happiness desert.”

269: “Well I say we all have to start somewhere if us want to do better and our own self is what us have to hand.”

287: “’They hold they own,’ he say, ‘and its different.’”

281: “I be so calm. If she come, I be happy. If she don’t, I be content. And then I figure this the lesson I was suppose to learn.”

245: “I read my fortune right away. It say, because you are who you are, the future look happy and bright”

253: “Being alive begin to seem like an awful strain”

268: “If a mule could tell folks how it’s treated, it would”

281: “I know I can live content without Shug”

273: “the only way to stop making somebody the serpent is for everybody to accept everybody else as a child of god…no matter what they look like or how they act”

281: “the more I wonder, the more I love”
