Found Poem: Survival
Grace Burks, Maggie Smith

You better shut up and git used to it.
I tell him I can fix myself up for him
I don't have nothing
But he do it to me anyway.
I don't have nothing to offer and I feels poor
My heart knock but I don't cry
All I know how to do is stay alive.

I spend my wedding day running
Outnumbered from the start.
Say I'm evil and always up to no good.
She ugly.
She ain't smart either.
And another thing— she tell lies.
My heart knock but I don't cry
All I know how to do is stay alive.

The worst part is I don't think he notice
I see something crazy in his eyes
I suffer.
A slave.
A captive.
My heart knock but I ain't cry.
Nobody ever love me.

All I know is how to stay alive
But I don't ever get used to it.
