Found Poem: Miracle of Affliction
Meg Trammell, Lucy Good

When a woman marry
she 'spose to keep a decent house and a clean family.
Clean the floor and windows
make the wine
wash the altar linen
make sure there's wood for the stove.

He say Why don't you look decent?
I don't have nothing,
to fix myself up for him,
wipe the sweat and dirt off my face as best I can.
He look at me.
It like he looking at the earth.

Most times I pretend I ain't there.
He never ask me how I feel.
Nothing.

Some womens can't be beat
I think bout Nettie,
She fight, she run away.
Sofia,
she still a big strong girl,
all her life she had to fight.
Shug,
she say whatever come to mind,
forgit about polite.

They say,
You deserve more than this,
You got to fight. You got to fight.
You got to fight them for yourself.

For the first time in my life,
I feel just right.
