Afraid to Remember
Miles Kadrie and Elodie Nix

Afraid to Remember

By Miles Kadrie and Elodie Nix

People yelling

Preferred silence

He was alone.

Mortar fire

Swirl of memories

Afraid to speak.

Cold in the bones

Black and wet

No place to go.

Quick bursts of gunfire

He knew he would die

Field just exploded

All he could do

was watch

Evil ground

It haunted him.

All very quaint and remote

Unnatural things

Too abstract,

too distant

nothing tangible at stake

It felt so good it hurt

It was the burden of being alive.

He couldn't make himself brave

The truth sucks him down

All the terrible things

He had seen and done.

But it didn't matter

No memory

therefore no guilt

Nothing else...
