How can I convey my search for identity and illustrate a personal journey of self discovery? My pieces seek to answer this through images haunted by the eyes of both my past selves and of others. They are also guided by the question of how I could illustrate my own aversion to feeling seen and the simultaneous claustrophobia and isolation that I experience because of it. These pieces seek to show the influence the eyes of others have had on my own identity and ability to grow, in spite of the judgment and claustrophobia these eyes have projected onto me.
I began my sustained investigation with an intention to portray myself very literally, through a series of self portraits that emphasized my own personal changes, both physically and in character. Slide 1 is a claustrophobic collection of previous selves making eye contact with the present viewer where I experimented with the all seeing eye, used it as an abstract way to show others' influence. I also experimented with ghostlike figures(slide 7,8,15) to create a more anonymous portrayal of self, using only key symbols like my orange shoes to indicate myself.
