The Healing Power of Creative Expression

How does one be with the unfathomable, the sudden shift in realities and loss like we experienced when Sumner Smith died a few weeks ago?

How does one be with the unfathomable, with the sudden shift in realities and loss like we experienced when Sumner Smith died a few short weeks ago? As we began producing this year’s first issue of Periaktoi, and contemplated the role art and literary work plays in our community, we thought about this question.

When Sumner died so suddenly, as a community we grieved. Many gathered in the quad and produced a mosaic of heartfelt thoughts, prayers, and colored-chalk sketches. Each day, as a community we would walk across this public artwork until it faded with time and rain washed it all away. We offer these images of community art in remembrance of Sumner Smith.
