Baylor Tennis Teams Sweep State Titles

Baylor’s tennis teams swept the state championship with the boys’ team blanking reigning champion McCallie 4-0, while the girls’ team were 4-1 winners against reigning champs Knoxville Catholic. The all-time team title counts are now 16 for the Red Raiders and 14 for the Lady Red Raiders.

Senior Wade Donovan won a singles match against McCallie, with the other team points in singles provided by victories from senior Arya Kallambella and freshman Anurag Kallambella. The Red Raiders got the doubles point by winning two of those three matches, thanks to the teams of junior Jackson Mactaggert and senior Fernando Navarro, and Kallambella and freshman Patrick Mactaggart.

Senior Margarette Berdy, sophomore Anne Cullen, senior Claudia Finlay, and junior Sloan Proffitt secured the doubles point for the girls’ team, with singles victories coming from Proffitt, freshman Evie Mahler, and Finlay. Finlay was a five-year member of the varsity team and went 6-0 in singles in four appearances at the state tournament. She also went 3-0 in doubles, winning both of her matches in the 2024 tournament.

Kallambella was crowned the boys’ singles state champion with a straight-sets victory over Michael Wang of McCallie, and finishing his Baylor career as state’s top player. In girls’ doubles Mahler and Proffitt won the state title, with Berdy finishing as runner-up in singles.


Swimming Dynasty Reaches 20-Year Milestone, Girls Win State

For the 20th consecutive year, Baylor boys’ and girls’ claimed the combined TISCA State Swimming and Diving Championship, while the girls’ team finished as the 2025 state champions, scoring 263 points to Ensworth’s 245. The boys’ team finished as runner-up by less than 20 points.

The boys’ 400-freestyle relay of seniors Jon Smith and Luke Waldrep, junior Ethan Gover, and sophomore Hayden Vicknair broke the school and state records with a time of 2:59.4.


Baylor Girls Win State Rowing Title

The girls’ crew team swept the Tennessee and Georgia State Rowing Championship to claim the 2025 state title enjoying wins over rivals GPS and Harpeth Hall. First place finishes included the Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8+, Varsity 4, Second Varsity 4+ (B), and Novice 8+. boys’ team claimed first place in the tournament in the Varsity 4+ boat, Second Varsity 4+, and Third Varsity 4+ and enjoyed wins against McCallie and MBA. In the Southeast Regional Championships. Earlier in the season, the annual Carney Cup race against GPS went to the Baylor girls for the fifth straight year.


Wrestling Wins 20th Traditional Crown After Winning Duals

Two weeks after winning the DII-AAA duals title with a dominant 41-24 win over McCallie, the Red Raiders added another state championship with the program’s 20th traditional crown. Senior and Brown University signee Max Norman won his fourth individual crown. Other individual titles were won by juniors Gabe Swann, Oliver Phillips, and Titus Norman, who held on for a hard-fought 1-0 win that was voted the tournament's best match. Junior George Emendorfer and sophomore Malachi Puckett finished as runners-up.


Softball Wins Region, Falls in State Final

Baylor softball capped an outstanding season before ending their incredible run of nine straight D-II-AA crowns after a 14-0 loss to a tough St. Benedict team. Earlier in the season, a clutch three-run homer by sophomore Adison Wallington with one out in the ninth inning ended with a 7-4 win against Chattanooga Christian School. A few days later, an 8-4 victory over CCS clinched the East Region title with a 6-0 record in region play. Other highlights included a 13-1 over GPS.


Track and Field Enjoys Record-Breaking Season

The Red Raiders track team enjoyed record-breaking performances at the TSSAA DII-AA state championships and in regular season matchups. In the boys’ competition, senior Gilbert Stein placed second in the triple jump and third in the 110 & 300 hurdles, while adding his name to the Baylor record books in the decathlon championships with a 6,442-point performance. The boys’ 4x100 team placed second while setting a school record of 42.39. The boys’ 4x800 team placed third. Earlier in the season, Stein earned Most Valuable Male Athlete honors at the Midsouth Invitational.

In the girls’ state competition, junior Ellie Higgs placed second in the shot put, and the girls’ 4x100 team placed third. Earlier in the season, senior Addi Greene won the 2K steeplechase in her first attempt at the event and set a new Baylor record with her time of 7:29.67. At the Midsouth Invitational, the girls were led by seniors Maddie Winchester, first in discuss and third in shot put; Franny Brooksbank, first in triple jump; and Maryl Ford, and first in pole vault. The 4x400 relay team earned a commanding win.


Baylor Hoops Include Three East All-Region Players

The Baylor boys’ basketball team wrapped up its season with a hard fought battle against Briarcrest Christian in the Division II-AA state tournament, finishing the season with a 15-13 overall record that included two wins (73-53 and 49-40) over McCallie. Seniors Zane Restelli and Kevin Sacas were named to the East All-Region Basketball Team.

Highlights from the Baylor girls’ basketball team season included two wins against GPS. A 53-41 contest led by sophomore Amiya Leach’s 20-point performance helped the Red Raiders overcome multiple pushes from the Bruisers to close the game strong. Freshman Xahara Willis was named to the East All-Region Basketball Team.


Baseball Claims East Region Champion Title

Baylor’s baseball team earned an eighth consecutive East Region title and opened their season sweeping McCallie in a special three-game showdown at AT&T Field, the home of the Chattanooga Lookouts. The team headed to the state playoffs, where they lost close games in the best of three series, bringing the 2025 season to a close in the state quarterfinals. Earning All-East Region recognition were senior Matt Dill, Pitcher of the Year, and sophomore Blake Lundy, Player of the Year. All-Region team selections were senior Camden Cloud, juniors Jack Schuman, Wells Grisham, and Henry Allen, and sophomore Mac Morris.

Lundy was later named this year’s D2-AA Mr. Baseball, after batting .440 on the season and leading the state with 15 homeruns and 41 RBI’s. This is the fifth consecutive year a Red Raider has claimed the Mr. Baseball award. According to Max Preps, Lundy’s 15 homers are the second most in the nation.


Lacrosse Celebrates All-State and All-Region Players

The boys’ lacrosse team had a strong season with an overall 12-5 record and celebrated an exciting double overtime 9-8 wins against Nolensville and dominant wins throughout the season. Making the 2025 All-Region team were seniors Tyler Rice, Noah Miles, and Gabe Hill, junior Hank Etzler, and sophomore Henry Kelle.

The girls’ lacrosse team finished with a 6-10 record, with junior Hannah Jones earning All-State honors. The team also celebrated the accomplishments of All-Region Players that include Jones and sophomores Addie Deihl, Kacky Chapman, and Brie Duke. Senior night was made even sweeter with a decisive 18-6 win over GPS.


Soccer Season Ends in State Quarterfinals

With the Final Four on the line, senior Philippe LaForge gave the Red Raiders the early lead before falling 3-1 to an unbeaten Ensworth team. The 9-7-3 season closed with appreciation for the senior leadership of Jackson Bergamann, Marshall Bible, Miles Busch, LaForge, and Carter Weekley.

Baylor Hosts Auckland City FC as FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ Training Site

Auckland City FC trained at Baylor’s soccer complex during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ June 11 to July 19. Baylor was designated as the official Team Base Camp Training Site, and Chattanooga was selected as the official Team Base Camp Host City. The Electric Power Board is partnering to provide power to the media center.

The FIFA Club World Cup brings together champion clubs from across the globe and is widely considered a key lead-up to the FIFA World Cup 2026™, which will also be hosted in the United States. Hosting Auckland City FC not only shines a global spotlight on Chattanooga but positions the city to potentially host national teams in 2026.

“We were thrilled to host Auckland City FC at our soccer complex and to partner with the City of Chattanooga to showcase our hospitality,” said Baylor’s Head of School Chris Angel ’89. “Baylor has always had a global focus, and we are honored and thrilled to be selected as a training site for such a prestigious global sporting event.”


Sean Russell Named Head Wrestling Coach

Sean Russell, Regional Training Center South Head Coach at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, has been named Baylor School’s varsity wrestling coach. Russell joined UTC’s coaching staff in June 2021 after an impressive collegiate career.

RTC South has produced numerous high school state champions, Fargo champions, and All-Americans. A four-time state champion and NCAA All-American, Russell has coached several athletes to national prominence, including NCAA qualifiers and Southern Scuffle finalists. He helped UTC wrestlers secure conference championships and national tournament berths.

Russell is also the head coach and founder of Minion Training Center, a wrestling facility in Chattanooga with programs dedicated to the growth and development of wrestlers of all levels.


Amanda Cotter Named Head Girls’ Cross Country Coach

Amanda Cotter has been named head coach of the girls’ cross-country team. Cotter was captain of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga cross country and track teams, a Southern Conference champion, a member of the NCAA All-Region cross country team and a UTC record holder for the distance medley relay. She served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for UTC from 2015-2020. In that role, she also oversaw the academic performance of women’s cross country, resulting in a 2018 team GPA of 3.8, the highest in program history.


Middle School Athletics

Baseball

The varsity team was led by Jack Corey and Andrew Smith at the plate with the highest batting averages, in the field by Mason Bankston, West Seacat, Ryder Flaherty, and Corey with the highest fielding percentages; and on the mound by Charlie Scearce and Preston Powell with the most innings pitched. The Middle School junior varsity team finished 8-7-1 concluding the season on a five-game winning streak.

Basketball

The boys’ varsity basketball team finished second in the ISC Tournament with key victories against McCallie, East Lake Middle School, and Chattanooga Christian School. Eighth graders Jax Nicholas and Labron Shackelford, and seventh grader Cole Fritz earned ISC All-Conference selections. The sixth grade team’s season highlights included wins over Lake Forest, Chattanooga Patriots, and McCallie. The junior varsity team had notable wins against Lake Forest, Christian Heritage, and Chattanooga Christian School.

The girls’ basketball team finished the season with a 17-0 record and won the independent school league regular season and tournament championships. Making the all-league varsity team were seventh graders Sunni Beasley, Schotie March, and Aubrey Bush. Their season included two wins over rival GPS (54-23 and 40-23).

Lacrosse

The boys’ lacrosse earned their second Eastern Tennessee Youth Lacrosse Association (ETYLA) championship in three years, downing the West Rebels of Knoxville in the championship game to reclaim the league trophy. The Middle School varsity squad was undefeated in Chattanooga-area competition in a season that included five weekend commitments to play out-of-town opponents. Leading this squad were outstanding eighth graders George Brock, Reed Caplener, Owen Clark, Tucker Gibbs, Jack Guthrie, Cooper Hensley, Henry Hickey, Jack Mauldin, Jaxson Metcalf, Joe Mitch, Thomas Mize, Jax Nicholas, Campo Perdomo, Harrison Phillips, Cole Pitts, Wyatt Provonsha, and Torin Rigers. The Middle School junior varsity squad improved significantly over the course of the year and succeeded in flipping three early season losses into victories in rematches.

The girls’ lacrosse team ended the season on a high note, beating Huntsville by a score of 5-2. The program had 56 girls participating across all three levels, and the 13 eighth graders were excellent leaders, setting a positive example in practice and in the games.

Track

The girls’ track team won every meet of the season and brought home the ISC Championship trophy, while the boys’ team finished the conference meet third overall. Individual first place winners were seventh graders Caroline Willoughby (shot put) and Tegan Lewis (800-meter race); and sixth grader Carmyn Watkins, 400-meter race. The boys’ 4x100 relay (eighth graders Harris Stinson, Braedyn Johnson-Mills, and Timlan Williams; and seventh grader Crei Gordon) placed first in the conference meet.

Wrestling

Wrestling wrapped up the season with a number of impressive individual performances at end-of-season events. At the Tennessee Valley Wrestling Conference Varsity Tournament in December, seventh grader Fletcher Thompson took home the league title at 90 lbs. and was joined on the podium by seventh graders Gray Thurman (second, 130 lbs.) and Kasen Maddux (third,120 lbs.), eighth grader Jaxson Metcalf (third, 100 lbs.), and sixth grader Dex Jones (fourth, 75 lbs.). Sixth grader Lucas Moore also competed in the varsity division at 70 lbs. In the junior varsity tournament, seventh graders Reid Nelligan (185 lbs.), Cooper Webb (100 lbs.) Becket Pursley (86 lbs.), all took home titles. Also placing for the Red Raiders were sixth grader Teagan Kincer (second,165 lbs.) and seventh grader Landry Brown (fourth, 140 lbs.).

Golf

The girls’ golf team finished the season as ISC tournament champions while the boys’ team finished as runners-up in the boys’ competition.

Swimming and Diving

The swimming and diving team included 23 swimmers and 12 divers. In swimming, the boys’ and girls’ team records were 4-2, with the girls defeating Signal Mountain, Dalton, Calhoun, and Nooga Swims. The boys had wins over Signal Mountain, Calhoun, Nooga Swims, and the Chattanooga Southeast Tennessee Homeschool Association (CSTHA). Eighth grader Harrison Banks was undefeated in individual events and eighth grader Nissa Ruth had an impressive Middle School swim career. The boys and girls diving teams celebrated first place with wins against Signal Mountain, Dalton, and Calhoun and CSTHA. Sixth grader McKinley Rogers placed first in three meets and second in two.
