ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP: R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Grant Writing Program

The R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Scholars Program highlights the importance of respect at the program’s core: Regard Every Soul Purely Embracing Compassionate Thoughts.

Through the R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Scholars Program, Baylor students become tutors, mentors, and friends to kids in the Chattanooga community who otherwise might not have the opportunity to receive one-on-one help with their school work.

The children from Westside and Carver Recreation Centers who are enrolled in Baylor’s tutoring program are referred to as “scholars” rather than students or tutees to convey the leadership they possess, explained Elin Bunch, Community Service Director. “The scholars in our program are powerful thinkers and learners; our role is merely to partner with them as they pursue their education.”

Grant Writing

Grant writing offers Baylor students the opportunity to further enrich and enhance the R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Scholars Program. Each grant begins as an idea by a Baylor student who sees ways the program could be enhanced. Over the summer, many students choose to take a step toward making their idea a reality by writing a detailed grant that outlines their goals, plans for execution, budget, and reasoning. At the beginning of the fall semester, each grant is reviewed, and after an interview in front of a panel of chosen faculty and a member of the R.E.S.P.E.C.T. board, many are funded and become an exciting part of the program.

Many coveted additions to the program such as the Anderson Awards Dinner and the Reading Reward Trips started off as student grants. Other grant-funded projects have included taking scholars on Walkabout excursions, building a butterfly garden, establishing a competitive robotics team, and renovating the Carver Center library. The grant program is not only a way to better the program as a whole – it is an opportunity for students to be involved in its growth. For Baylor students, the experience of writing a grant and seeing it become a reality helps to instill a love of creating change and bettering their community through philanthropy, and it provides enrichment and additional support for the scholars.

THE CAPSTONE PROJECT

The Civic Scholars must complete a project that makes a contribution in at least one of the following areas:

∙Addresses a civic issue of public policy, environmentalism, community or national service, or volunteering and service learning;
∙Produces a new and authentic connection between Baylor and the civic life of a larger community;
∙Adds to civic awareness and engagement at Baylor;
∙Demonstrably fosters greater awareness of the common good and its importance.
