Baylor honored seven members (pictured right) of the school community during the Headmaster’s Awards and Memorial Chapel Service on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019, as part of the Alumni Weekend festivities.
Los Angeles real estate developer, philanthropist, and founder of FlyawayHomes Steaven K. Jones ’50 (front row, far left) was this year’s recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award (see related story). Jones told those gathered that he has concluded that “it’s the people, not the buildings, that make a school outstanding.” Listing legendary faculty members James A. Pennington, Coach James B. Rike, Headmaster and Mrs. Herb Barks, and Joseph E. Bradley, Jones singled out Jim Hitt as a “shining light.” “Mr. Hitt introduced me to English and American literature; his enthusiasm was contagious. And today, I can still recite some of the works that he gave us to read and love.”
In addition to Jones, other award recipients were (front row, left to right) outgoing Chairman of the Board of Trustees Chris Crimmins ’80, who received the John T. ‘Buddy’ Fisher ’46 Distinguished Service Award; retired faculty members Park Lockrow and Dr. Dan Kennedy, both of whom received the Dedicated Faculty Award; (back row) Chuck Coleman ’89, Pat Guerry ’85, and Wes Hodges ’03 were inducted into the Baylor Sports Hall of Fame.
The service also was a memorial to each Baylor alum or faculty/staff member who passed away in the most recent calendar year and a special remembrance of those in the Class of 1969 who have passed (see video below).
Other highlights of the weekend included the annual golf tournament, class reunions including the 50th reunion of the Class of 1969 (pictured above), festivities surrounding the Baylor-McCallie football game, and a Saturday morning and afternoon with lots of activities for the entire family (watch video below).
