Coach Jim Morgan Memorial Service is Jan. 27 at 2 p.m.

A memorial service for retired Baylor chemistry teacher and legendary wrestling coach Jim Morgan will be held in Baylor's Alumni Chapel on Sunday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m. with a reception following in the Worsham Arena lobby.

Morgan passed away on Friday, Jan. 18 at the age of 80. He retired from Baylor in 2009 after 24 years at the school.

As Baylor's head wrestling coach, Morgan posted an impressive 539-84-1 dual meet record. His Red Raiders won nine traditional state championships, six duals state championships, were traditional runners-up five times, and duals runners-up six times. During his tenure, 204 Baylor wrestlers were medalists (first place through sixth) at the state tournament and 59 won state championships.

Morgan was a strong advocate for the sport of wrestling and administrated the traditional state tournament for 24 years. For those efforts, he was presented the TSSAA Distinguished Service Award.

Before coming to Baylor, Morgan was the head wrestling coach at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where he was an NCAA Division II Wrestling Coach of the Year. He is a member of the Tennessee Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame, and, of course, the Baylor Sports Hall of Fame.
