Baylor has the third best overall high school sports program in the nation, according to MaxPreps.com.
The Raiders were ranked 68th in the MaxPreps Cup after winter sports were finished with their seasons, but winning four state championships and finishing as runners-up in two other sports at this year's Spring Fling moved Baylor up to a number three national ranking in the final 2017-18 standings.
The MaxPreps Cup is a ranking system devised to rate every high school sport state championship in the nation in order to determine the nation's best overall high school sports programs. Varying point totals are awarded to teams that win a state title, or finish in second place, based on the type of sport, the size of the state, the type of enrollment division and the number of teams participating in the enrollment division. Points are also awarded for teams that appear in national rankings for selected sports.
Baylor posted a total of 1,748 points behind champion American Heritage of Plantation, Fla., with 2,039 and Westminster of Atlanta with 1,834. Porter-Gaud of Charleston, S.C. and St. Xavier of Louisville round out the top five. See the entire list here.
MaxPreps credited Baylor with winning six state champions this year – volleyball, girls' soccer, baseball, softball, boys' soccer, and girls' tennis – but did not consider the Raiders' combined and boys' swimming titles since swimming is not a state association sport in Tennessee. In addition, Baylor teams were state runners-up in boys' basketball, duals wrestling, boys' tennis, and girls' track. The Baylor boys' soccer team finished the season ranked number 18 in the nation by MaxPreps.
MaxPreps will also post state-by-state top ten lists (look for Baylor atop the Tennessee list) along with the spring season champion, the large, medium and small schools top 25s, and the best boys' and girls' programs of the 2017-18 season. Check it all out at maxpreps.com.
