Originally built as a new library and a space for science classes, the building honored Baylor’s third headmaster, Dr. Herbert B. Barks, Sr.  A dedicatory service was held during commencement weekend of 1961. Today, Barks Hall remains as the home of Hedges Library while also serving as the location of Baylor’s Middle School for students in grades 6-8.

Dr. Barks, Sr. served as the school’s third headmaster from 1929 -1964, and Dr. Barks, Jr. was the school’s fifth headmaster, serving from 1971-1988.

In his remarks to the group of current and former trustees, retired and current faculty, coaches, and administrators, Head of School Chris Angel '89 recalled the first time he met Dr. Barks was on an admission tour in the spring of 1983. "I was introduced to this man who instantly gave me his full attention, as if I was the only person on campus. He paid attention to me. He cared," said Angel. "Today, we celebrate the career of my dear friend, my mentor, and someone who I consider to be family...to me, we are here celebrating the one person, above all others who represents the spirit and heart of Baylor."

"I have a photo in my office that I see every day of Herb," continued Angel.  "It’s a photo of him, surrounded by students with him laughing in the distinct, beautiful way we all know and love. Seeing it reminds me to always remember why we are here at Baylor, that it all about the students. Herb taught all of us the importance of connection, connection with the land around us, on this sacred hill, the power of this sacred river beside us, and most importantly the power of connection with each other."

A new plaque has been installed at the Hedges Library entrance of Barks Hall recognizing Dr. Herbert B. Barks, Jr. '51.
