Baylor seventh grader Jacob Tate, Zone Spelling Bee runner-up
Baylor seventh grader Jacob Tate finished in fourth place at the Regional Spelling Bee on March 5 at UT-Chattanooga. The bee was held virtually and included spelling and vocabulary categories. Only the bee champion advanced to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Tate had qualified for the regional competition by virtue of of his second-place finish at the Zone Bee in February. Tate made it through 13 rounds before he was stumped by "pelisse" and settled for runner-up.
Tate was third at Baylor's Middle School spelling bee, finishing behind champion eighth grader Piper Ryan and runner-up seventh grader Ananya Chakraborty in a competition that went 33 rounds. Chakraborty and Ryan finished third and fourth, respectively, at the zone bee and do not advance.
