Baylor Honors Upper School Leaders at Awards Day

Upper school sudents were recognized at the annual Awards Day Ceremony on May 13.

Baylor honored eleven of its outstanding student leaders with Founders Awards, the highest the school bestows, at the annual Awards Day on May 13. Recipients are selected by a vote of the faculty.

The JOHN ROY BAYLOR AWARD is presented to seniors who have contributed richly to the school both as a citizen and scholar. Named for Baylor’s visionary founder and first headmaster, the John Roy Baylor Awards for 2026 were presented to valedictorian Anna Stoddard and salutatorian James McCorkle. Stoddard will attend the University of Chicago and McCorkle will attend Emory University.

The ALEXANDER GUERRY AWARD, named for Baylor’s second headmaster, is presented to seniors who have contributed richly to the position of honor and right at Baylor. This year’s honorees were Yulissa Gerard and William Hubbard. Gerard will attend Trinity College and Hubbard will attend Georgia Tech.

The HERBERT B. BARKS, SR., AWARD is presented to boarding students who have contributed richly to the spirit and quality of life of the residential program. This honor is named for Baylor’s third headmaster. The 2026 honorees were Sarah Elizabeth Watson and Hank Etzler. Watson will attend the University of Tennessee and Etzler will attend the University of Oklahoma.

Named for Baylor’s fifth headmaster, the HERBERT B. BARKS JR., AWARD is presented to seniors who have contributed richly to the Baylor spirit. This year’s honorees were Braylee Newell and Heath Techasiriwan. Newell will attend the Savannah College of Art and Design and Techasiriwan will attend the University of Georgia.

Seven Win Special Awards

The HUBERT J. STAGMAIER AWARD is given to an outstanding all-around senior or seniors. This year’s honorees were Eloise Adams, Gavin Boggs, Brandon Oakes, and George Stowe. Adams will attend Davidson College, Boggs will attend The University of Texas, Oakes will attend the University of Alabama, and Stowe will attend Washington and Lee University.

The SERVICE TO SCHOOL AWARD is presented to seniors who have contributed richly to the school. This year, the award was given to Avery Glover. Glover will attend Berry College.

The MICHELLE KADRIE AWARD is given to seniors who combine a strong desire to do their personal best in school activities with a caring attitude toward others. This year’s recipient was Zoe Misenhimer. Misenhimer will attend the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

A FACULTY COMMENDATION AWARD was presented to Emily Betterton. Betterton will attend the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Valedictorian and Salutatorian Named

Baylor named Anna Hamilton Stoddard valedictorian for 2026, and James Tillman McCorkle was named salutatorian. Stoddard will attend the University of Chicago and McCorkle will attend Emory University.

Class of 2026 Celebrates College Decisions

The annual " annual College Decision Day" marked the end of the college admissions process for the Class of 2026.

Members of the Class of 2026 gathered for Baylor’s annual College Decision Day celebration, marking the end of the college admissions process and the beginning of the next chapter for the senior class.

Organized by the College Counseling Office, the event featured students wearing shirts representing the colleges and universities they will attend this fall while decorating campus walkways with chalk-drawn college logos leading up the hill to the chapel turnaround.

The Class of 2026 submitted 1,223 applications to 233 colleges and universities across 43 states, Washington, D.C., and six countries, including Canada, China, England, Italy, Scotland, and Spain.

This fall, graduates will matriculate to 83 different colleges and universities in 30 states, Washington, D.C., Canada, and Belgium. Forty-eight students will remain in Tennessee for college, while 118 will attend schools out of state and three will study internationally.

The class also includes 43 student-athletes who will continue competing at the collegiate level, including six D1 athletes.

Royal Spanish Football Federation Community Training Session

The event is open to the general public with tickets distributed through a random drawing.

The Chattanooga Host City Authority, comprised of the City of Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Baylor School, Vision Hospitality Group, Chattanooga Tourism Co., and The Sports & Events Corporation, is proud to announce a community training session with Spain’s National Football Team. The team will open its preparations to the public with a special training session on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the Baylor School Soccer Complex.

The Spanish National Team will host a Community Training Session at Baylor School’s Soccer Complex on Saturday, June 6, with training beginning at 6 p.m.

Admission to the event is free, but attendance is limited. Tickets will be distributed through a random drawing, and fans must complete an online interest form to be eligible. No purchase or payment is required to enter.

Individuals selected in the drawing will receive two (2) tickets to the training session. The ticket request form will remain open until Monday, June 1 at 5:00 p.m., and selected attendees will be notified by Wednesday, June 3. Each individual may submit only one entry; multiple submissions will not be considered. Submitting the form does not guarantee tickets, as availability is limited.

Members of the media who wish to attend and cover the training session must apply in advance for official credentials by Monday, June 1 at 5 p.m. Media access is limited and restricted to approved applicants only. Submission of a credential application does not guarantee approval, and only those who receive approval confirmation will be granted entry.

Students Selected for Summer Leadership Trips

Students from the Class of 2027 are selected for summer leadership trips.

Students selected for the summer Joe Key Award enjoy the Acadia National Park area of Maine

David M. Abshire Civic Leadership Award
Fourteen rising seniors were selected to travel to Washington, D.C., this summer on the David M. Abshire Leadership Trip for an intensive eight-day experiential course of study on national leadership, ethics, honor, and service. The program was created in partnership with the Center for the Study of the Presidency and the late Dr. David Abshire ’44, who served as president and CEO of that organization.

Joe “Sarge” Key Awards
Twelve rising seniors were selected for the Joe Key Award, a trip that recognizes selfless character and involves seven days of sea-kayaking, hiking, and camping on the islands of Acadia National Park this July. The trip honors the late Joe Key, who worked at Baylor from 1961 to 1988 as a military instructor and study hall supervisor and was affectionately known a “Sarge.”

Construction on Rike Field Reaches New Heights

The elevator shafts and stairwells of the new Rike Field Complex are taking shape! Pictured in the photo above are (left) the south side elevator shaft and (right) the north side stairwell. Note the future windows for the attic and second and third floors on the north stairwell. These openings offer a glimpse of the building’s overall height and signal that construction on this stairwell is nearing its highest point. In addition, wind screens have been installed along the chain link construction fence surrounding Rike Field.

New Parking Area

A new gravel parking area just beyond Roddy Theater toward TNACI (formerly the overrun parking for the Baylor/McCallie football game) has been created to offset the loss of parking on Rike and the art studio/music building lot.

Construction begins next month on Baylor’s new central energy plant that will support campus growth on the Rike Field Complex currently under construction, as well as Weeks, Roddy, the Ireland art studio, and the music building.

The location of the energy plant is behind the art studio and music building, and the estimated completion date is December 2026.

The project will temporarily eliminate 12 parking spaces between the art center and the music building. A new gravel parking area just beyond Roddy Theater toward TNACI (formerly the overrun parking for the Baylor/McCallie football game) has been created to offset the change, and no major disruption to daily campus activity is expected.

A central energy plant functions as a shared engine for campus buildings, providing heating, cooling, and power more efficiently and reliably than individual systems in each facility. While much of the work will take place out of sight, the project is an important investment in campus infrastructure that will allow Baylor to support new construction while improving long-term energy efficiency across campus.

TIMELINE

Monday, Feb. 9 - Construction fence installation begins (parking lot outside of the art studio/music building closes)

Monday, Feb. 16 - Erosion control and demolition begin.

Tuesday, Feb. 24 - Digging of ground floor basement walls and foundation begins.

December 2026 - Estimated completion date.
