Middle School Student Support

Adviser Program

In addition to teaching, faculty members serve as advisers, providing a personal relationship for each child on a campus that already has so much to offer. Advisers meet with their advisees throughout the week and are in regular communication with parents through phone calls, emails and conferences. They also take advisees on occasional outings, giving an already close group opportunities to relax and socialize off campus.

Extra Help

Extra Help is a scheduled block of time offered weekly for all Baylor students. During Extra Help, teachers are available to meet with students to provide additional support for their class. Support can range from reinforcing a concept or skill to preparing for a test to help with homework.

Student Support Counselors

Lizzie Gendimenico and Christy Tomisek are dedicated to providing support to Middle School students. In their roles, they provide assistance tailored to individual social, emotional, and academic needs. In addition to working with students and parents, they are also a valuable resource for faculty who are developing strategies to help students reach their individual potential and prepare for the challenges of the Upper School.

The Learning Center

The Middle School Learning Center is a centrally-located space that provides skill-building and content-specific support to students who would like additional academic support or would benefit from structured academic intervention. Students may be assigned to the Learning Center in their schedules as a part of a student support plan or may utilize it during daily help periods to work with math and humanities specialists. The Learning Center specialists maintain close communication with students’ teachers and advisers to ensure each student’s needs are met to the fullest.

Peer Helpers Program

As an additional level of support, Baylor’s Middle School also provides a Peer Helpers program. Students with a strength in math or language can volunteer to work with their peers during study hall times, benefiting both the tutor and the student gaining extra help and guidance. Other Peer Helpers may work to create awareness and education concerning issues relevant to our middle school students. In addition, they may build community by reaching out to peers who have been ill for an extended time or are grieving the loss of someone who was close to them.

Academic Coaching

Students who are experiencing difficulty with a course may be invited to attend Academic Coaching sessions after school. In Academic Coaching, students receive small group tutoring from a Baylor teacher. The tutoring sessions are designed to pre-teach or reteach content and provide students with additional guided practice.
