What Families Shared After Their First Year at Baylor

Over the summer, Baylor surveyed families whose children completed their first year as students. Out of the 260 surveys that were sent, 100 people participated, yielding a 38.5% response rate.

99 percent of the respondents reported that Baylor’s academic program met or exceeded their expectations.
99 percent reported that Baylor’s academic support and mentorship met or exceeded their expectations.
99 percent reported that Baylor’s academic rigor and depth met or exceeded their expectations.
97 percent reported that the depth and impact of Baylor’s advisor program met or exceeded their expectations.
95 percent reported that opportunities for leadership development at Baylor met or exceeded their expectations.

Who Responded

42 percent either attended or had family who had attended Baylor, while 58 percent had no prior affiliation with Baylor.
50 percent were Upper School parents, and 50 percent were Middle School parents.
70 percent were day families, and 30 percent were boarding families.

Beyond the Numbers
Parents were also given the opportunity to leave us a comment about anything they cared to share with the school. Their remarks help bring our survey numbers to life:

Visual Arts at Baylor

Baylor offers art classes in grades 6-12, and our diverse team of arts instructors offer students a wide range of experience in the visual arts. Disciplines include painting, drawing, digital design, photography, pottery, and woodworking.

A Sample Of Upper School Courses

Drawing

This course introduces a variety of drawing materials: graphite, charcoal, pen and ink, compressed charcoal pastels, and oil sticks. Working from live models, still life, the interior, and landscape, students use gesture, contour, and value studies to develop skills for accurately rendering form and space. As proficiency increases, the more personal aspects of students’ drawing are encouraged.

AP Studio Art

AP Art 3-D

The 3-D portfolio is intended to address a broad interpretation of sculptural issues in depth and space. These may include mass, volume, form, plane, light, and texture. Such elements and concepts may be articulated through additive, subtractive, and/or fabrication processes. Examples of approaches include traditional sculpture, architectural models, ceramics, and three dimensional fiber arts. Departmental approval is required for enrollment.

2D / 3D ARt + Design

2D / 3D Art + Design

This 2D / 3D multimedia course teaches students to use software, hardware, and tools to create works of art and design. These skills provide a strong sculptural and design foundation for work in any other upper school studio art course. Projects range from product design, textiles, patterning to hand carving clay, and plaster. This course provides an excellent foundation for students that want to take “Sculpture” or "AP Studio Art."

Pottery

Students enrolled in Baylor’s introductory pottery class learn hand building and throwing on the wheel, while developing skills in forming, firing, and glazing pottery of their own design. Classes take place in the Ireland Fine Arts Studio, where each student has an individual wheel. Highlights include the Japanese method of Raku and throwing on the wheel. If they want to learn more, they can advance to a Pottery 200 course, which covers the design and production of wheel-thrown pottery in stoneware. Hand building, using contemporary techniques, is incorporated as well. Mixing glazes and firing technology round out the course, and students

Student Work Prominently Displayed

The Roddy Theater lobby features student exhibits throughout the year, and student art is permanently displayed in academic buildings throughout campus. The Periaktoi Art and Literary Journal features a wide selection of student work online.

Visual Art Facilities

Our beautiful fine arts complex reflects the emphasis Baylor places on the fine arts. Students in each grade level have access to facilities that are among the finest available in secondary schools. A few of the highlights include:

Drawing, printmaking, pottery, sculpture, photography, computer graphics and painting are all offered in an entire building dedicated to studio arts. The building also has a space dedicated for student exhibits.
