Bett Adams credits “Tim squared” for helping him determine his career choice. “[Former Walkabout director] Tim Williams and I had a close relationship when I was a student here, and we have continued to travel, kayak, and work together since I graduated.” The other Tim is Bett’s former roommate, English and Walkabout instructor and Director of the Global Scholars Program Tim Laramore. “I get to pick his brain about how things are on the other side of the student teacher relationship.”

Bett is a Chattanooga native whose father taught chemistry at Baylor. After Bett graduated in 2002, he attended the University of Tennessee and majored in English literature with minors in Spanish and business. He left Tennessee after college to live in Washington State, where he first tried snowboarding and skiing. He loves all outdoor activities, including hunting and fishing, “but kayaking is pretty much all I think about.”

Even when he lived in Washington, Bett often returned to Baylor to assist with Walkabout trips. He particularly enjoys working with people who have little or no outdoor experience and exposing them to something for the first time. “I think that one of the greatest ways to make a positive influence on the world is through teaching tomorrow’s leaders, and I know that many of them are enrolled here,” says Bett. “Kids require you to be quick on your feet and you can’t get away with much… especially with these kids!”

Bett appreciates that the Baylor community is one in which “we help one another when things get tough and thrive on one another’s accomplishments. I feel like everyone carries more than their own weight, which fosters a successful environment for all.”
