What Families Shared After Their First Year at Baylor

Over the summer, Baylor surveyed families whose children completed their first year as students. Out of the 260 surveys that were sent, 100 people participated, yielding a 38.5% response rate.

99 percent of the respondents reported that Baylor’s academic program met or exceeded their expectations.
99 percent reported that Baylor’s academic support and mentorship met or exceeded their expectations.
99 percent reported that Baylor’s academic rigor and depth met or exceeded their expectations.
97 percent reported that the depth and impact of Baylor’s advisor program met or exceeded their expectations.
95 percent reported that opportunities for leadership development at Baylor met or exceeded their expectations.

Who Responded

42 percent either attended or had family who had attended Baylor, while 58 percent had no prior affiliation with Baylor.
50 percent were Upper School parents, and 50 percent were Middle School parents.
70 percent were day families, and 30 percent were boarding families.

Beyond the Numbers
Parents were also given the opportunity to leave us a comment about anything they cared to share with the school. Their remarks help bring our survey numbers to life:

Getting Involved in the Parent Alliance

Baylor's Parent Alliance provides a variety of organized events, committees, social gatherings, and other ways to get involved as volunteers, as well as to network and build community with one another.

Through the Parent Alliance, parents can:

Be a resource for Baylor’s administration, faculty and staff.
More effectively contribute their time and talents as volunteers.
Help build school spirit and a sense of school community.
Foster parent-to-parent communication and support.
Help promote and market the school.

Parent Alliance Ambassador Service

Parent Alliance Ambassadors are selected current students and parents who help new families transition to Baylor by welcoming them into the school community. There are two areas of focus: (1) helping new day students in grades 7-12; (2) helping new boarding students in grades 9-12.

Ambassadors for Day Families

Because the sixth grade is the school’s main point of entry for day families, the parents and students in this grade begin building as sense of community almost immediately. The Day Ambassadors service is designed for day families in seventh grade and above. The purpose of the program is to:

1. Improve communication between Baylor School and new day families
2. Help new day families transition as they start their Baylor experience

In the late spring and throughout the summer, new families are matched with a current Baylor family. In partnership with the school administration, a new family’s parent ambassador serves as a resource for questions that may arise throughout the year.

Ambassadors for Boarding Families

The mission of the boarding ambassador program is to assist new Baylor boarding families and students from around the world (grades 9th through 12th) with the transition to Baylor and to make the beginning of school as well as the entire first year a positive experience by encouraging and helping them become familiar with Baylor and Chattanooga.

Boarding Ambassador volunteer opportunities include:

1. Assist with move-in/orientation weekend and help make the beginning of school a positive transition by encouraging new students and serving as a point of contact for questions during orientation and throughout the year.

2. Volunteer to drop off baked goods for the dorms 2 – 3 times per semester.

3. Encourage and assist with events sponsored by Parent Alliance & Res Life that promote and further interaction between day and boarding students. Such events might include: Pumpkin Carving & Painting, Gingerbread Decorating, Ms Kitty’s on the Quad, and Movie Night.

Parent Alliance Committees

The Baylor Parent Alliance Board is supported by the following committees:

The Baylor Fund Committee - assists the Development Office in the execution of The Baylor Fund Campaign. Grade captains recruit parent volunteers to make phone calls to all Baylor parents.

Admission Support Committee - assists the school in activities related to the recruitment, successful enrollment and smooth transition of students and their families. Activities might include recruitment events, follow-up telephone calls to prospective parents as directed by admissions, welcome activities with newly enrolled families, and activities which foster relationships between day and boarding families.

Ambassadors for Day Families - designed for day families in seventh grade and above. In the late spring and throughout the summer, new families are matched with a current Baylor family. In partnership with the school administration, a new family’s parent ambassador serves as a resource for questions that may arise throughout the year.

Ambassadors for Boarding Families - attend orientation weekend, and help make the beginning of school a positive transition by encouraging new students and serving as a point of contact for questions. The committee chairs work with the Dean of Campus Life and the Boarding School administration.

Tailgate Committee – plan and organize home game tailgates which promote the Baylor Community and school spirit.

Used Uniform (Red Raider Resale) Committee - benefits Baylor parents and students by providing not only an important service of providing reasonable cost uniforms to the school community, but also raising funds for the Parent Alliance to use as needed.

Baylor Backers - Boosting School Spirit - Students in all grade levels participate in a variety of activities, which is why our Baylor Backers promote spirit campus-wide and enhance awareness of the many arts and athletic events that take place throughout the year.

Parent Volunteer Opportunities

The Baylor community is supported by parent volunteers in many different ways throughout the school year. Some of these include:

The Baylor Fund Volunteers - Volunteers assist the Development Office with the annual Baylor Fund Campaign. Grade representatives recruit parent volunteers for annual phonathons and other activities and events related to The Baylor Fund.

Admission Support Volunteers - help with admission events that take place on campus as well as the annual welcome for newly enrolled families.

Day Families Ambassadors - make welcome calls to new families in the late spring and throughout the summer so new families feel less anxious about their first few months at Baylor.

Boarding Families Ambassadors - attend orientation events and help make the beginning of school a positive transition by encouraging new students and serving as a point of contact for questions.

Tailgate Volunteers – help plan and organize home game tailgates which helps facilitate school spirit for the entire Baylor community.

Used Uniform (Red Raider Resale) volunteers provide facilitate and organize monthly used uniform sales that provide uniforms at a reasonable cost.

Baylor Backers - help support the many arts and athletic events that take place throughout the year.

Celebrations Auction and Uncorked - parent volunteers work tirelessly with the Development Office to ensure the success of the school's signature fundraising events for The Baylor Fund and The Baylor Backers.
