Taverne and Smith Repeat as State Doubles Champs

Baylor senior Benji Taverne and junior Hunter Smith successfully defended their 2018 state doubles championship Friday, defeating McCallie's team of John Knight and Charlie Park 6-3, 6-1, and becoming the first back-to-back Baylor doubles champion in 44 years.

To reach the final, Taverne and Smith defeated Sims Lance and Michael Nelson of MBA 6-1, 7-6 (1) in the quarterfinals and eliminated Hugh Graham and Anson Anderson, also of MBA, 6-4, 6-1in the semis.

The duo is Baylor's 15th state doubles champion and only the second Baylor team to repeat the feat. Pem Guerry '75 and Wes Cash '75 combined for three straight state titles in 1973, 1974, and 1975.
