Baylor 2, GPS 1. Freshman Syd Berzon was the winning pitcher and provided the game-winning RBIs to lead the Baylor softball team to a 2-1 win over GPS and a fifth straight state championship Thursday.
Berzon scattered five hits and struck out four in the complete game victory, allowing an unearned run in the top of the third inning that gave the Bruisers a brief 1-0 lead.
Baylor's half of the third began with a single by Emily Rye followed by speedy Makayla Packer beating out a bunt. Sophie Piskos' ground ball forced Packer out at second but moved Rye to third. Piskos was replaced by courtesy runner Britt Barton who went to second on Acelynn Sellers' ground-out. Berzon then delivered a two-out single that drove in both Rye and Barton with what would prove to be the winning runs.
After allowing a two-out double in the seventh inning, Berzon coaxed a weak fly ball for the final out, stranding the tying run.
Baylor has now won 13 state championships, five in a row, and eight of the last nine. Championship seasons are 1993, 1994, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. Head coach Kelli Smith '95 has been a part of all 13 state titles - as a player on the '93 and '94 state champs and as head coach for the others.
The Raiders finish the 2019 season with a 42-3 record.
