Baylor Swimming Wins 14th Straight Combined State Title; Girls Back on Throne; Boys Third

The Baylor swimming and diving team won its 28th combined Tennessee Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (TISCA) state championship Saturday, the 14th straight title, while the Baylor girls returned to the state throne for the 15th time, the first time since 2013. The Baylor boys were third.

Champions Smith, 200 Medley Relay Team Lead Baylor Girls 

The Baylor girls were led by senior Addison Smith, who repeated as state champion in the 500 yard freestyle, breaking her own Baylor record in a National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA) Automatic All-American time of 4:46.11. Smith teamed up with sophomore Ellie Waldrep, junior Jewel Gordon, and sophomore Callie West to win the 200 medley relay state title, posting the fastest time in the nation for the event, 1:39.91, this season. The time set a new Baylor record and is a NISCA Automatic All-American performance.

Other top three finishes included Smith's second-place, All-American finish in the 200 freestyle; Waldrep's runner-up, All-American performance in the 100 butterfly; Gordon's third-place finish in the 50 yard freetyle; and sophomore Haley Rice's third-place spot in the one-meter diving competition. Baylor girls finished second in both the 200 freestyle relay (sophomore Dallas Woods, Gordon, senior Jamee Mitchum, Smith) and the 400 freestyle relay (Waldrep, Mitchum, junior Avery Wilson, West).

Other Baylor finishes - Eva Binder (6th - one meter diving); Heidi Dierig (9th, 200 IM, 11th 500 freestyle); Gordon (6th - 100 breaststroke); Sarah Hollowell (12th - 100 backstroke); Mitchum (7th - 100 backstroke, 8th - 100 butterfly); Wilson (14th - 100 butterfly); West (7th - 50 freestyle, 9th - 100 freestyle), Woods (9th - 100 backstroke, 10th - 200 IM).

Baylor coach Dan Flack was named the TISCA State Women's Coach of the Year.

Champions Kirby and Borisov Pace Baylor Boys

The Baylor boys' team had two state champions. Senior Jack Kirby won the 100 yard backstroke in an All-American time of 48.21 and junior Alex Borisov was the 200 IM champion, touching in 1:50.40. Kirby was second in the 100 freestyle and Borisov was runner-up in 100 breaststroke. The champion duo combined with sophomore Aidan Sims and junior Will Tippett to claim second place in the 200 medley relay. The 200 freestyle relay of Kirby, Tippett, Chapman Varnell, and Michael Gullage also finished in second place.

Other Baylor finishes - Noah Althoff (8th - 200 IM); Zach Kangieser (4th - 500 freestyle, 10th - 200 freestyle); Sims (7th - 500 freestyle, 11th - 200 freestyle); Daniel Snyder (16th - 500 freestyle); Tippett (9th -100 breaststroke, 12th - 200 freestyle); Daniel Unhuryan (8th - 100 breaststroke, 13th, 100 butterfly); Varnell (16th - 100 freestyle).
