Baylor 5, MUS 4. Baylor scored five runs in the first inning, highlighted by a grand slam homer by TSSAA Mr. Baseball finalist Colin Ahearn, and held on for a 5-4 win over Memphis University School in game one of a best-of-three series Wednesday.
Cooper Kinney had the other RBI with his first-inning single, Jay Dill doubled, and Gehrig Ebel, Nick Kurtz, and Taylor Shahan added hits. Greyson Linderman was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits and striking out nine before running into trouble in the fifth. Gage Johnson pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit and fanning four.
Baylor 12, MUS 1. A seven-run fourth inning for Baylor was the key to clinching a trip to next week's Spring Fling state championship tournament as the Raiders completed the sweep with a 12-1 win over the Owls in game two.
Colin Ahearn was in the middle of the action once again with a bases-clearing three-RBI double in the fourth, following up on a two-run double by Cooper Kinney. Ahearn also had a two-run homer in the second frame as he finished with nine RBI in the doubleheader. Danny Corona had a solo homer in the third inning and finished with two hits and two RBI, Gehrig Ebel was 3-for-4 with a fifth-inning homer and finished with three RBI, and Christian Martin and Taylor Shahan added singles.
The winning pitcher was, you guessed it, Ahearn, allowing only two hits and striking out five in four innings before giving way to Patrick Johnson who walked one and struck out one in one inning.
Baylor, 24-6, will begin its defense of the 2018 state title at the state tournament beginning Tuesday at 5:00 at Wilson Central High School.
