Baylor softball coach Kelli Smith '95 has been named national Coach of the Year by extrainningssoftball.com, a website that covers high school, club, college, professional, and national softball.
Smith led the Raiders to a 39-4 record last spring, culminating in a fifth straight state championship. She notched her 500th career win in April. Baylor has won 13 state titles, two when Smith was a player for the Raiders and 11 with her at the helm.
The website also named Baylor sophomore Syd Berzon one of 125 high school All-Americans. The pitcher was 20-2 with a 0.75 ERA and struck out 213 batters in 112 innings as a freshman last year. She was the winning pitcher and drove in both runs in a 2-1 win in the state championship game. Berzon has already committed to LSU.
