Cooper Kinney '21 (left) and Syd Berzon '22 (right) have been named Gatorade Players of the Year for Tennessee in baseball and softball.
The Gatorade State Player of the Year award winners are evaluated and selected on the basis of athletic excellence, academic achievement, and exemplary character.
Kinney, already named Mr. Baseball by the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association, led Baylor to a 27-4 record and a third straight state championship this season, batting .480 with 10 home runs, 50 RBI, with an OPS of 1.529, all the time maintaining a 3.81 GPA. Kinney is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the National Honor society, and volunteers his time at summer camps and coaching youth baseball. He signed a baseball scholarship with the University of South Carolina and is projected to be an early round selection in the Major League Baseball draft in July.
Berzon, only a junior, pitched and hit the Baylor softball team to a 27-1 record and a sixth consecutive state championship this spring. Posting a 17-0 record with a miniscule ERA of 0.47, Berzon allowed just 16 hits and 11 walks while striking out 179 batters in 77 innings pitched, and batted .389 with five homers and drove in 28 runs. A boarding student from Buffalo, N.Y. with a 3.68 GPA, Berzon is a prefect in Hunter Hall and volunteers locally at the J.A. Henry YMCA. She is ranked as the number 11 prospect in the country and has verbally committed to play at Louisiana State University.
