Lara Newberry Phillips ’05

Inducted 2022

Lara Newberry Phillips earns Baylor Sports Hall of Fame status in softball and volleyball. For accomplishments in both sports, she was named the Chattanooga Times Free Press Female Athlete of the Year and won Baylor’s Outstanding Athlete and Best All-Around Athlete awards.

Phillips led the Raiders to three consecutive state softball championships, 2003-2005, and set a record for most doubles in the state tournament in 2004. She was an All-State performer three times.

Her stellar volleyball play, however, earned her a scholarship at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where she played the libero position in every game from 2005 to 2008. At UTC, Phillips amassed an extensive list of awards and honors, including Collegiate Volleyball Update’s National Libero of the Year, the A.C. “Scrappy” Moore Award, and the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame’s Female Athlete of the Year, all in 2008. She set four school records at UTC including one for single match digs (51), one Southern Conference record, and two NCAA records for single season digs (942, 7.19/set) and career digs (3,176). Phillips was inducted into the UTC Sports Hall of Fame in 2020.
