As a student, Bill McMahan '67 played varsity football, basketball, and baseball and captained two teams.

When he returned to the school as a teacher and coach in 1974, Bill's goal was "to give back a part of what was given to me." He coached junior high school basketball, wrestling, and track, and from 1974 to 1976, coached ninth grade football. His record was 22-1 with two city championships. He was a varsity football coach for thirty-one years beginning in 1977, always emphasizing discipline and commitment over winning.

In 1991, Bill became head boys' and girls' track coach. His impressive records and dedicated athletes and are proof that Bill has more than given back to his alma mater. He was named Chattanooga Area Track Coach of the Year in 1991, '92, '94, '95, '96, '98, '99, 2000, '01, '02, '03, '08, '10, and '11. In 2008 Bill received the A.F. Bridges Coach of the Year award from the TSSAA in recognition of good sportsmanship and citizenship. He was named Tennessee State Coach of the Year for 2009-10. In his twenty-one years as head track coach, Bill's girls' team took the regional championship fifteen times. They were state champions in 1997, '98, and '99 and in 2008, '09, '10, and '11 and runners up in 2001. Bill's boys' team took the state championship title in 2000 and 2002, and they were runners up in 2001 and 2008. The boys took the regional championship in 2001, '02, and '03.

In recognition of his great success in coaching, Bill was inducted into the Greater Chattanooga Area Sports Hall of Fame in February 2012.
