Retired Baylor coach Park Lockrow, who was involved in coaching competitive tennis for 42 years, says this about Pat Guerry ’85, “If I were asked to build a program around any one player who I coached, it would, without question, be Pat Guerry. He led his teams by example, his commitment was inspiring, he brought out the best in his teammates, and his teams always overachieved. No student-athlete with whom I have worked has represented Baylor School’s core values more effectively and honorably.”

Though he also played football his senior year at Baylor, Guerry lettered four years in tennis and served as team captain. His Baylor teams never lost a dual match and won three state championships. Guerry was named to the All-District and All-Region teams and was a Parade High School All-American his senior year. He also served as a leader on the Student Council, Honor Council, Round Table, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Guerry went on to be a four-time NCAA All-American at Sewanee: The University of the South and was a two-time NCAA Academic All-American, a distinction given only to juniors and seniors. While at Sewanee, he was the recipient of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Division III National Rookie of the Year, the Division III Senior Player of the Year, and the Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award, given for scholarship, sportsmanship, and humanitarian efforts. The university also awarded Guerry the Charles Hammond Memorial Cup, given to the male athlete who best exemplifies excellence in scholarship and leadership.

Ranked number one in the country in Division III singles for most of his Sewanee career, Guerry was a four-time All-Conference pick in the Southern Athletic Association, won four conference singles championships, and was a two-time NCAA Division III singles semi-finalist. Sewanee won SAA team titles in 1986, 1988, and 1989.  While Guerry played for the Tigers, they posted a record for the most team wins with 24 in 1988 and were ranked seventh in the nation in Division III.

Guerry was inducted into the inaugural Sewanee Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004, into the Tennessee Tennis Hall of Fame in 2012, and into the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame in 2013. He is past president of USTA Atlanta and USTA Georgia and has served on the board of USTA Southern.
