Bill Matthews '09 enters the Hall of Fame as a 10-time state champion for Baylor’s cross country and track and field teams. Matthews is one of six Baylor males who have won state cross country championships and one of two Baylor athletes who have won two “triple crowns” in track, taking state titles in the 800, 1600, and 3200 meter runs in the same season. He is the only Baylor athlete to win a Footlocker regional title and has held Baylor records in 5 kilometer cross country and the 3200 meter run, and a state record for the cross country championship meet. Team captain in both cross country and track at Baylor, Matthews was a three-time All-American, was named Athlete of the Year by the Chattanooga Times Free Press, and was the Gatorade Runner of the Year for Tennessee.

Matthews’ college running career began at the University of Georgia, where he was the best freshman in UGA history in the 5,000 meter run and All-SEC in 2009, but his running was cut short by a diagnosis of brain tumors in 2011. He transferred to Wake Forest University and finished his college career working with the Demon Deacons’ cross country and track teams and making the Dean’s List twice, even while undergoing and recovering from surgery.

Today, Matthews is an executive with Antaris Technologies.
