Baylor senior Mary Lee Schaerer imitates "The Girl with the Pearl Earring" by Johannes Vermeer, 1665
Baylor students of art instructor Heath Montgomery '99 were recently given a fun, educational assignment via the school's distance learning systems. Inspired by a social media meme, Montgomery gave his painting and digital design students the challenge of finding a famous painting and recreating it as closely as possible in a photograph.
"Art is memetic at heart, it represents something else, and memes are a form of art that has become wildly popular," says Montgomery. "This project helps students look at what is in the painting as they find something similar to recreate the scene. This assignment and the Getty challenge are just two ways to encourage engagement with historical content.
