Baylor Wrestling Team Flexes in Mid-Season Tourneys

The Baylor wrestling team is making its case as the favorite to win a fourth consecutive state championship in both duals and traditional divisions in 2022, making strong showings in three regional and national tournaments in December and January, including championships at the Prep Slam in Atlanta and the Fandetti-Richardson Brawl in Johnson City.

With all 14 wrestlers medaling in the top six at the Prep Slam, hosted by Holy Innocents Episcopal School, Baylor dominated the field that included teams from New York, Connecticut, Georgia, Texas, and Florida. Among those medal winners were five individual champions – seniors Jackson Bond, Garrison Dendy, Gunnar Garriques, and David Harper and freshman Nate Askew.

The Raiders had six champions and two runners-up at the Fandetti-Richardson Brawl in Johnson City, running away with the team title by more than 50 points over a strong field that included second-place Bradley Central, Lakeway Christian in third, and host Science Hill and Spain Park rounding out the top five. Champions included Jackson Bond and fellow seniors Michael Kinsey and Omaury Alvarez, Garriques and junior classmate Micah Tisdale, and Jacob Bond. Baylor's two other finalists were runners-up Dendy and junior Tine Latimer.

The Raiders' third place finish at the Kansas City Stampede was behind Stillwater (Okla.), currently ranked sixth in the nation, and Edmond North (Okla.), presently ranked 19th in the U.S. It was Baylor's best finish in nine appearances at the Stampede. With only two champions in the previous eight years, the Raiders doubled that number with Alvarez and Garriques taking the top spots in their weight classes. Jackson Bond was a runner-up with Jacob Bond, Askew, and Tisdale medaling in the top six.

On Dec. 7, 2021, the Intermat/MatScouts website had Baylor ranked 25th in the Fab 50 list of top high school wrestling programs. The Raiders were state duals champion and traditional state champion in 2019, 2020, and 2021. Baylor wrestlers have won a total of 28 team state championships (duals and traditional) and Baylor wrestlers have won 121 individual state titles.

The state duals championship tournament is scheduled for Feb. 4 with the traditional championships on Feb. 19.
