When Nancy Seiters talks about Baylor traditions, such as Round Table or Baylor-McCallie week, at family gatherings, she doesn’t have to explain much. Her grandfather, father, uncle, and two cousins all attended the school. Her father, Doug Seiters ’61, also taught at Baylor; he was a Latin instructor for four years before embarking on a 38-year career at Sewanee.

After earning her undergraduate degree in geology from Sewanee, Nancy worked for a short time at the Bureau of Land Management in Oregon. “I loved what I was doing. Geology is fun, but I knew soon after I entered the work world that I needed to be working with kids, and I quickly got into teaching. It’s hard to resist when it’s in your blood.”

Nancy, who had already taught in various summer programs, moved to Nashville and taught middle school earth science at Harpeth Hall for five years. While teaching, she earned her Master of Education in human development counseling with a concentration in school counseling from Vanderbilt and interned in two Nashville schools. She then became a school counselor in Leadville, Colo., and was there for seven years before coming to Baylor.

Ready to move back to the Southeast, Nancy was delighted to find an opening at Baylor— and to be teaching science again. “I love adventure and discovery, and I love information. Science is the combination of all that, and it is so exciting to be sharing it with the kids.”

Nancy has two young boys, Gabriel and Nico. In addition to spending time with her children, Nancy enjoys hiking running, trail running, and music. She plays the guitar, writes her own songs, and has performed music in Nashville.
