Teachers on Teaching
The Essence of Teaching at Baylor.
"I am not sure which part of Baylor has touched my life the most in the last four years. I have taken advantage of getting involved with the school through teaching in the middle school, coaching, and being a dorm parent. The first thing that I noticed about the campus was the relaxed atmosphere and friendly faces. Most would think that this was just a 'first impression' feeling that would pass with time, but it hasn't. I can't go across campus without someone saying a kind word or acknowledgment. This peace of mind sets the tone for me daily and I thank God for the wonderful dream he has made my family experience.
Being a middle school teacher, I feel privileged to be able to work with the youngest students at Baylor. I get to relive the excitement that I experienced stepping on to the campus for the first time on a yearly basis. I marvel at the enthusiasm, independence and energy of the average sixth grader. The students that I have had the opportunity to teach are motivated and want to discover. As a teacher, this hunger feeds my desire to teach. I find it energizing to stay ahead of their desire to learn.
Coaching cross country and track has exposed me to a more relaxed area with young adults. Students show a different side of themselves when they are competing. I love the challenge of inspiring young athletes pushing themselves beyond what they thought that they could do on their own. If we win, that is the icing on the cake. If they believe in themselves, I have succeeded as a coach. A middle school coach teaches discipline, striving for bigger things and most importantly, the love of the sport. Most middle school children don't know what they can do, let alone, if their bodies will let them do anything. Baylor offers the exposure of a mixed-group experience that helps foster growth which in turn creates success. I don't think I would be happy if I didn't get the experience of working with kids outside of the classroom. I get to see all of the personality and I love it.
I also have the pleasure to work with upper school kids. Living on campus as a dorm parent has been another interesting and fun experience. Baylor is a completely different world at night. The cafeteria has a family feel with students and faculty families sitting together sharing their day. I admire these students. They go to school, have a social life and are able to hold everything together better than most adults. My family and I feel like we have an extended family outside of our door.
As a teacher, Baylor has been the best thing that has ever happened to me and I have been at some pretty wonderful schools. It is a dream to have motivated students that have parents who care, fellow teachers that love to teach, administrators that get involved and a beautiful campus. With Baylor, life is good."
