"This is the most remarkable service-learning program I have seen," says Grant Lichtman, education blogger. Read his profile of Baylor and the community service program here.
Community Service Activities
After School Tutoring
After a full day of classes, more than 100 Baylor student volunteers travel to nine different sites in Chattanooga.
Students who participate in the grant-writing course identify various needs at service locations, then research, write, and present their grant proposals before a panel of administrators.
Student leaders ensure the service programs are running smoothly and rules are being upheld, and are selected each year by a group of graduating seniors.
Community Service Trips
Students travel annually to Asheville, NC, Jamaica, and New York City.
Each December, the community service program hosts a holiday party to honor and reward those children who have demonstrated a strong dedication to their homework and extra educational/enrichment activities.
QUOTES FROM STUDENTS
“It's so inspiring to see children confident and happy. I know that without my help some of the children would not have even attempted their homework. Service is such an incredible experience!”
“I have already learned that I take for granted ‘everyday things’ that some kids never get.”
“I plan to make a difference by giving each child and person the hope that they might not have had before.”
"The most important thing Community Service has given to me is the ability to be open-minded."
"I've learned how much power each one has to make a difference. And if one really wants to help another and facilitate change, it's possible."
