What our tutors say about the Baylor Writing Center

"The writing center has given me many opportunities. I have improved my own writing skills, enhanced my communication and leadership abilities, seen how others think and learn, and broadened my life experience in general. All this occurred while I was "helping" someone else.

"I've been tutoring in the writing center for the past two years and I've really enjoyed the experience for a number of reasons. It's satisfying to help others but tutoring has also improved my own writing. I've also gotten the chance to know some students I never would have crossed paths with otherwise."

"Working in the writing center gives me a wonderful feeling--like I'm somehow making a difference at Baylor."

"I was definitely skeptical about becoming a writing center tutor because I felt like I didn't know enough to actually teach someone else about how to write better. The training sessions definitely helped boost my confidence, and when I began to work with my peers, I felt really good about it. You don't have to know everything, and you are not expected to! I had to just remember that I'm working with a friend who understands that I am not perfect. Being a writing center tutor has greatly improved my self-confidence and also confidence in my writing. Most likely, I will continue being a writing center tutor in college, because it has been such a rewarding experience for me."

"As a writing center tutor, I have gained more patience with help others in writing, and I have developed into a better writer myself. I can come up with my thesis and main points in an instant. The writing center makes writing easier and fun!"
-Jessica Williams '06

"The writing center is a place where a tutor can share his or her knowledge with a tutee. In the end, both the tutor and tutee go away with valuable knowledge -- the tutor with the knowledge of how to help others and the tutee with an increased knowledge of how to apply proper grammar and language."
-Rachna Patel '06

"The ways that I have helped people through the writing center are some of my best experiences at Baylor. It is a great feeling when you know that you have helped someone to better understand something that they were struggling with. You don't have to be a genius in order to be a tutor. Just being there for them makes the difference."

"During my first two years of high school I attended a public school where I never wrote a paper.... The writing center has helped me learn the process of developing a paper and, therefore, has made me feel more prepared for college. My tutor ... has been extremely helpful as a tutor, but she has also made my emotional transition into Baylor so much easier.... She has helped me more over the past year than she probably realizes.... Every time I come out of the writing center, I feel like I improve both my papers and my writing techniques. (The writing center will help students improve short and long term.)"
