Peer Support Network
What is it?
Baylor’s Peer Support Network (PSN) provides support to individual students, meets with adviser groups, and helps in times of campus or national tragedy. The group involves approximately 30 students in grades 10-12 who are committed to listening to their classmates and helping them work through various issues.
New members are selected in a lengthy process that includes faculty recommendations, an application, an assessment survey, and interviews. They then participate in an extensive training and get together throughout the school year for ongoing training. “Peers play an important role in a teenager’s life and our Peer Support members are trained and committed to help their fellow students. They’re available to listen to anyone, anytime, and all conversations are confidential,” says Donna Robinson, Director of Counseling and Guidance.” Donna says typical issues that PSN members encounter range from roommate problems, to managing the stress that comes from trying to juggle too many responsibilities, to helping students relate to other students’ family illnesses. “A lot of the time, it’s just listening. They are not there to solve problems but to help students see their options and offer support,” says Donna.
