A Typical Boarding Day at Baylor

At Baylor, each day's schedule is a little bit different. Follow Fanjun "Frank" Bu '17, a boarding student from Jinan City, Shandong Province, China, through a typical Thursday schedule...

Thursday

Before School

My alarm goes off at 7:10 a.m. Sometimes I snooze a little before getting up and heading over to the dining hall for breakfast.

8:00 a.m. - Meetings

There’s a “meetings” period on Thursdays, rather than extra help. I am the president of the physics club and we plan meetings on some Thursdays. On other days, I’ll go to extra help, usually for English or history.

8:45 a.m. - AP Chemistry, Dr. Miles

We do a lot of experiments in chemistry, and I like that because it’s hands-on. I enjoy learning that way. Dr. Miles is very nice and a super teacher.

9:52 a.m. - Colloquium

Last year I enjoyed the "life skills" sections of colloquium period and this year I’m looking forward to the college counseling and leadership sessions.

10:54 a.m. - English, Dr. Casson

I love Dr. Casson. He’s a very interesting person and a great teacher. We just finished writing our biographies and are beginning to read some short stories. Reading in English sometimes takes me a while but I am able to keep up. In China, we started English classes in third grade, plus my mom is an English major, so I have a good background.

12:01 p.m. - Abstract Math, Mr. Weaver

This is my favorite class. Abstract math is basically like the first year of college math would be like. I’m also taking AP statistics so I get a lot of math every day, which goes well with my love of physics.

1:00 p.m. - Lunch

I usually go back to my room and relax a bit before I go to lunch. I’ll sit with a group friends and there are lots of choices for lunch in the dining hall. Sometimes I’ll read a little to prepare for my history class which comes after lunch.

1:40 p.m. - AP US History, Mr. Cox

Another favorite class of mine. Mr. Cox is great and it’s an intense class. Every member has to engage in class discussions, so we all have to push ourselves. We also have to read a lot and write a lot, which is my favorite part.

2:50 p.m. - Activities Period

I have a piano lesson with Mr. Schow every Thursday during this period unless I have another meeting I have to attend. He's a great musician and a wonderful teacher. I'm glad I have the opportunity to keep improving my piano skills.

After School

4 p.m. - Fencing
I’ve been fencing since eighth grade, and I’ll be fencing all year this year. I may also try to be part of the engineering/design group that will meet after school later on this year.

6 p.m. - Dinner
I love dinner. The dining hall is not only prettier and more functional since the renovation, but the food seems to be even better. I always eat with some friends before heading back to the dorm for study hours.

8 p.m. - Evening Hours
I usually practice piano for an hour or so after dinner and then I’ll go to the library to study. I concentrate better there than I do in my room. I need more than just the two hours (8 p.m. -10 p.m.) for studying, so I’ll normally begin at 7 p.m. and stay till 10 p.m. I’ll study in my room until 11 p.m. or so, and then I’ll stay up and read for a little longer. Even though I'm up a little later, I always get plenty of sleep.
