Cushman Fellows Program
Jill McCorkle, Author
(Introduction, Chris Watkins)
Baylor students enjoyed a captivating and humorous lecture by novelist Jill McCorkle, who was on campus as part of the school’s Cushman Guest Lecture Series. As part of her visit McCorkle also met with students in creative writing, Advanced Placement, ESL, and honors English classes.
In her remarks, McCorkle spoke about various influences as a writer, particularly her home and childhood memories. "Write what you know about," she told students. "For me as a writer, what I know goes back to the emotional core of home and how it has shaped me."
McCorkle was raised in Lumberton, North Carolina and was 26 when her first two novels, The Cheerleader and July 7th, were published to critical acclaim. Other works of fiction include Tending To Virginia, Ferris Beach, Crash Diet: Stories, Carolina Moon, Final Vinyl Days and Other Stories, and Creatures of Habit. Five of these have been selected as New York Times Notable Books of the Year.
The Cushman Guest Lecture Series is named in honor of long-time faculty member Bill Cushman '59, and made possible by benefactors Larry and Peggy King of Minnesota. Mr. King spent only one year on the Baylor faculty as Mr. Cushman's colleague in the Walkabout program, but he has remained a member of the extended Baylor family through friendships and his ongoing relationship with Walkabout and the Senior Trip.
