In a touching and lasting gift to the Baylor community, Joe selected the music and readings for the occasion. The music included performances by the Baylor string quartet, the Baylor concert choir, and a solo by Choir Director Vic Oakes. Rev. Ed Snow and Dr. Herb Barks '51 delivered remarks, and readings ranging from Rumi to Emily Dickenson were shared by Joe's five sisters. The eulogy was presented by Joe's brother, Kevin, and a chant by Buddhists Thanissara and Kittisaro (Randy Weinberg '70) was shared via a recording from a sacred mountain in South Africa.

The award is given annually by members of the 10-year reunion class to the faculty member they feel most influenced their Baylor experience. This summer, Gawrys was diagnosed with brain cancer, and a huge wave of support from concerned students, (past and present), colleagues, and friends immediately began pouring in from around the world.
