The son of Dr. Herb Barks, Sr., Baylor’s third headmaster, Dr. Barks grew up on campus and graduated in 1951. After serving as a minister for a number of years he taught at the Westminster School in Atlanta before becoming Baylor’s headmaster in 1971. That same year Baylor dropped its military program, and although his greatest legacy may be that Baylor became a coed school in 1985 during his tenure, one of the things he says he is most proud of is building a great faculty and bringing the first black student to Baylor. He was also known as an innovator at Baylor, developing such new programs as Walkabout and the annual Senior Trip.
