Oliver Henderson '94, Abigail Mitchell, Baylor Students — Mon, 15 April 2013 00:00:00 -0400

The Baylor School Fine Arts Department present Oliver Henderson '94, (tenor) and Abigail Mitchell, (soprano), perform selections from Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance for Upper School chapel. They were accompanied by the Baylor School orchestra and choir under the direction of Tom Schow and Vic Oaks. Henderson is the Assistant Professor of voice at Central Michigan University and is critically acclaimed for his comic timing and is accomplished as a comic singer and actor, and also for his romantic operatic leads. Mitchell recently came to international attention as the first prize winner of the 2011 International Vokal Genial Competition, sponsored by the Munich Konzertgesellschaft and the Munich Radio Orchestra. She was also a first place winner at the 2011 Concorso Vincenzo Bellini in Sicily.

The 12th annual Midwinter Night’s Blast concert featuring the Nighthawks, a group of faculty and student musicians. This year’s group features students Lucie Choi, Jordan McGuffee, Roma Lucero-Laemmle, Nora Corser,Lyza Dyskina, and Orlando Henne; and faculty members Bernard Fertal, Takisha Haynie, Kenneth Parks, and Pete Robinson. Local drummer Burnard Tate and saxophonist Larry Hardy are also joining the group.

The Baylor Players will present Shakespeare's Twelfth Night as the spring play in Roddy Theater April 27-May 1. Performances are April 27-30 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, May 1, at 2 p.m. The production features 34 cast members and 20 crew members, who have been working hard for more than two months. The production is directed by Schaack Van Deusen with Pete Robinson serving as the set director. This play also marks Pete and Schaack's 50th play/collaboration here at Baylor.

The Von D. Oehmig Sports Performance Center was officially dedicated on March 11. School officials, donors, Oehmig family members and their friends gathered to celebrate the new state-of-the-art space for varsity athletic training. The new fitness center was named in honor of Von Oehmig '32, father of Billy '67 and Randy '62. The facility cost approximately $1 million and was funded through the generosity of private donors.

Don’t miss the 10th annual Midwinter Night's Blast community service fundraiser Thursday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Roddy Theatre. Not only will you be supporting a great cause, but you’ll enjoy outstanding entertainment featuring the following students and faculty: Sarah Catanzaro, Brittany Davidoff, Bernard Fertal, A.J. Hancock, Allie Haskew, Takisha Haynie, Jake Kennedy, Parker Knight, Barrett Maurey, Kenneth Parks, Pete Robinson, and Sarah Van Deusen. Admission is $5 in advance and $8 at the door. Performances are suitable for all ages.

All proceeds from this fun and entertaining evening help fund Baylor's community service grant writing program, which enhances the afternoon learning experience for area children at various tutoring sites. Previous grants have provided classes in drama, astronomy, music, computer, Spanish, cultural understanding, African American history, and literacy and writing. The grants are written by Baylor students, and the programs are organized and managed by those students once they are approved and funded.

Her essay honored Nancy Franks, who led the way in opening the Volunteers In Medicine (VIM) Clinic in 2005. The scholarships are designed to help students recognize and learn from those in the community who have devoted their lives to noble purpose and to allow applicants the chance to see noble purpose as an important part of their futures. Lauren Templeton ’94 was on hand to congratulate Rebecca and her family. The scholarship program was established in honor of Harvey and Jewel Templeton, lifelong residents of Winchester, Tenn.

The ninth annual Mid-Winter Night's Blast music performance benefiting area children was held Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Roddy Theater. All proceeds from the concert help fund Baylor's community service grant writing program, which enhances the afternoon learning experience for area children at various tutoring sites. Previous grants have provided classes in drama, astronomy, music, computer, Spanish, cultural understanding, African American history, and literacy and writing. The grants are written by Baylor students, and the programs are organized and managed by those students once they are approved and funded.

Baylor's 17th annual winter dance concert took place Jan. 27-29 at 7:30 p.m. and Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. The company of 25 dancers were joined by Baylor musicians and guest dancers from the Chattanooga Ballet. Featured in this year’s concert are works by both student and professional choreographers. The event will also introduce the new group, BAD (Baylor Alumni Dancers), featuring former Vervé dancers who have continued their dancing in college and are now pursuing dance as a vocation or avocation.

Baylor’s ninth Headmaster and President Scott Wilson ’75 gave the keynote address during the school’s convocation ceremony Wednesday, August 26. Invited guests joined the full student body, faculty and staff in the celebration, which marked the beginning of the 2009-10 academic year and the official installation of Wilson as Headmaster. In his remarks, Wilson celebrated Baylor’s position as one of the nation's great schools, challenging students to seize the extraordinary opportunity available to them and to uphold the student-written honor code.

Upper School students were honored for their service to the school in 2008-09 during the school's annual Recognition Day ceremony; the 2009 National Honor Society inductees were also announced at the ceremony which took place in Baylor's chapel.

International Day

Baylor Middle School students recently participated in the school's annual celebration of International Day by preparing and sampling foods from around the world. The menu included malva pudding (Zimbabwe); hummus (Syria); bienenstich "bee sting cake" (Germany); kolaczki (Polish ice cream cookies); baklava (Greece); mandu (dumplings from Korea; raisin scones (Ireland); kheer (rice pudding from India); empanadas (Mexico); and stromboli (Italy). Sixth grade students even took the time to capture some video of their culinary treats. As a day/boarding school, Baylor is home to international students from 21 different countries. Baylor’s sixth grade students study German, Chinese, Spanish and Latin as part of the curriculum. The program focuses on verbal skills, vocabulary acquisition and a presentation of linguistic concepts. Additional components of study include culture, history and geography.

Convocation 2008

The entire Baylor School community came together for the annual convocation ceremony to celebrate the beginning of a new school year. Highlights included remarks by school President Dr. Bill Stacy and Michael McBrien, head of school; a reading of the Honor Code by Honor Council Chair Audrey Owens '09, a keynote address by faculty member Heather Ott, and a special thank you read by ten students in ten different languages. The students and languages were: Candy Wijaithum (Thailand); Luka Pascalicchio of Sweden (French); Michael Huang of Taiwan (Chinese); Julian Baker of Ecuador (Spanish); Max Boeckman (German); Jun Young Jang (Korean); Kemesha Woodfine (Jamaica/Jamaican dialect); Sofia Hoglund, (Finland); and Chuck Hudson, (English).

The BBN (Baylor Broadcasting Network) produced a special "ESPN college format" pre-game show that includde a rundown of the rivalry's history dating back to the early 1900s through today, interviews with current students, comments by former headmaster Herb Barks and others. They even unearthed some of the popular radio commercials from the 1970s, so you can relive those along with "behind the scene" commentary by faculty member Dr. Dan Kennedy. Baylor's 2007-08 academic year was officially launched with a Convocation ceremony celebrating the spirit of Baylor's community. Marching into the field house by individual classes, the student body of 1,076 students were joined by faculty and staff to listen to remarks by Dr. Bill Stacy, President/Headmaster; Michael McBrien, Head of School; William Probasco, Honor Council President; History Instructor Roger Vredeveld '79, and Jim Stover, Associate Head of Academic Affairs."This year Convocation marks and celebrates the opening of an academic year with a focus on tradition, academic intellect, and community. This year, for the first time ever, we recognize each class by a class flag, and the faculty and staff with an official Convocation flag," said McBrien. "It is a gift to be a part of the Baylor community, and the privilege which we all have been given is to do for Baylor, and for each other, all that we can. "

2006 Convocation

Baylor’s convocation ceremony took place August 23, marking the official beginning of the 2006-07 school year. Student Council President Tiffany Williams ‘07 addressed the students on the importance of the dress code, while Honor Council President Clay Stockett ‘07 led everyone assembled in a reading of the Honor Code. In addition to remarks by Headmaster Dr. Bill Stacy, students and faculty joined together in singing the alma mater. Dr. Stacy concluded the ceremony by ringing the original brass bell once used by Professor John Roy Baylor, the school’s founder and first headmaster (1893-1926). Dr. Baylor used the bell to convene classes for a student body that would grow from 31 boys to just over 190 in the years he served as headmaster. This year’s convocation involved 1,068 young men and women in grades 6-12. To watch the convocation, please visit the podcast section of our website.
