Welcome New Families

Scott_Wilson1.jpg

We are delighted that you will join Baylor School’s community in the fall. We know that you and your family have many questions as you prepare for this exciting new experience.  We have a number of programs in place to facilitate this transition, including spring and summer orientation sessions, technology training, and Parents' Day programs in the fall.

In this section of the website you will learn more about these programs, as well as uniform and book purchases, volunteer opportunities through the Baylor Parent Alliance, school communication, and other important information.   Knowing that we cannot anticipate all of the many questions you may have, please feel free to contact your grade level dean with any additional questions. We are here to help, and we look forward to seeing you on Baylor’s campus soon!

Sincerely, Scott Wilson '75, Headmaster

FAQ

Will there be an orientation for new families?

Yes, we have a very thorough orientation program for all of our new students and their parents. Information will be posted on our website later, but plan on saving the date on your calendar! In the meantime, if you have any questions please contact Teresa McDowell in the Middle School (423-757-2636), Susan Griffith in the Upper School (423-757-2510) or Anne Stover in Residential Life (423-267-8506 ext. 339).

When does the school day begin?

The dining hall and student center open at 7 a.m., and the library and campus store open at 7:30 a.m.

The Upper School academic day begins each day at 8:40 a.m. although Help sessions begin at 8 a.m. on each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Classes end at 3:30 p.m., depending on the day.

Middle School academic day begins each day at 8:40 a.m. Classes end each day at 3:05 p.m. At that time, all Baylor students begin their afternoon sport or activity. “Help” in the Middle School is offered every morning at 8 a.m.

What about grades and report cards?

Baylor's Upper School operates on a semester system, and students receive report cards four times each semester. The Middle School operates on a quarter system and students receive report cards eight times during the academic year.

Is there extra academic support?

One of the strengths of Baylor School is a wealth of programs, services, systems, and, most importantly, people who are focused on every student's success. Below is some additional information about these support systems.

Adviser program – All Baylor students are assigned an adviser, and students meet with this individual and 8-10 other students in an adviser group once a week.

Help - During Help, teachers are available to meet with students to provide additional support for their class.

Baylor Learning Center - The Upper School Learning Center gives students the opportunity to work with a faculty member on reading comprehension, writing across the curriculum and study skills.

How do I get involved as a parent?

As parents, step-parents or guardians of a Baylor student, you are all members of the Baylor Parent Alliance. You will have the opportunity to sign up for a number of parent volunteer opportunities. Please go to parents section of the website for more information.

Are there any used uniform sales?

Throughout the year, parent volunteers operate a Used Uniform store at the Parry Center (located on the back part of campus near the Guerry Tennis Center and outdoor pool). The dates are publicized with campus signs, the website, and also through email. As your child outgrows his/her uniforms you will have the opportunity to donate these items and earn "Baylor Bucks" that you can then use at future sales.

What about iPads, books and supplies?

Detailed information on iPads and books is available in the handbook which will be mailed to you in early summer. It is also posted in the "Useful Publications" list on the left. Middle School supply lists are also posted there. Upper School teachers will provide information regarding supplies on the first day of class.

When will I find out about dorm assignments and what to bring?

The Boarding Life Handbook covers many of the common questions new boarding parents and students have about boarding life at Baylor. This handbook will be mailed to you in early summer. It is also posted in the "Useful Publications" list on the left.
