Templeton Scholarship
For the last six years, thanks to the generosity of Baylor alum Lauren Templeton (class of 1994) and her family, Baylor has awarded the $5,000 Harvey and Jewel Templeton Noble Purpose Scholarship. The scholarship is designed to help students recognize and learn from those in the community who have devoted their lives to noble purpose and to allow applicants the chance to see noble purpose as an important part of their futures.
A student may compete for the Templeton Scholarship by interviewing a person who has led a life of noble purpose and writing a compelling essay about that person. Only students enrolled at Baylor during their junior year are eligible. Essays are due shortly after the end of the junior year. Recipients may apply the scholarship either to their senior year Baylor tuition or to their freshman college tuition.
The scholarship is named for Harvey and Jewel Templeton, life-long residents of Winchester, Tennessee. Harvey was well known for his excellence in his many endeavors, from new innovations in plant propagation and race car design to his spelunking discoveries and mountain climbing skills. Jewel was well known in the community as an adventurer, an avid snow skier, mountain climber, kayaker, and world traveler.
The Templeton family believes that finding purpose and putting meaning into one's life bring a sense of fulfillment. They define “noble purpose” as devoting oneself to something worth doing and doing it in an honorable manner. The Templetons also believe that a person possessing noble purpose is guided by a strong moral sense.
Contest essays are judged anonymously by an impartial panel of judges. The scholarship recipient will be notified during the summer and announced during an assembly in the fall. The recipient will read the winning essay to the school community, and the person whom the student interviewed will also be invited to attend.
