Q. We have never had a child attend boarding school before. How should we prepare for homesickness?
A. Homesickness is a very well understood, very easily recognized, and very readily remedied phenomenon. There are even some steps a family can take prior to the start of school to help ease the transition. The residential faculty at Baylor is well trained and experienced in dealing with transitional issues that arise. Parents who are concerned about their child should contact the student’s adviser and dorm head. The dorm head and adviser will talk with the student and will make sure that other caring adults in the Baylor community are aware of the transitional issues. The dorm head and adviser will work with the student to link him or her with other, older students with similar interests. The dorm head will work with the prefects and proctors (student leaders) to help the student. Finally, the dorm head and adviser will work to involve all students in activities and organizations in order to help the student to get out, to get active, and to meet new people.
Q: My daughter is a day student with many friends who are boarders. Am I allowed to take her friends to our home, to the store, etc.?
A. All parents of boarding students have submitted permission forms that allow for their son or daughter to ride in a vehicle driven by a Baylor faculty member, other students or only those adults the parents specify. These permissions are posted in each dorm. If the student does not have blanket permission to ride with other students, special permission can be attained by having the parents of the boarding student call the duty cell phone and the host parent calling the duty cell phone. Permissions for overnight leaves must be granted before 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Q. What is the best way for boarding parents to communicate with their child?
A. Cell phone or Instant Messaging
Q: We live out of state. Are we able to store on campus items that are difficult to transport (i.e., printer, bed pillows and comforter, textbooks, etc.) rather than shipping them home each summer?
A. Baylor does provide limited storage for boarders; however, it is not climate controlled.
