Webster’s dictionary defines legacy as, “anything handed down from the past, as from an ancestor or predecessor.” In this issue, we celebrate how a legacy can take many forms. Just as the donors to the $45 million Forever Forward campaign will make a difference in the school’s future with the transformation of the quad and the new $12 million academic center (above); the impact left by the people featured in the following stories is not bound by age, time served, or positions held. Rather, they will be long remembered for their varied and meaningful contributions to Baylor.

It's hard to imagine Jim Stover as anything other than an English teacher, but it was more fate than foresight that determined his career path 41 years ago.
For legendary Baylor coach and teacher Fred Hubbs, an amazing tenure of 47 years came to an end as the 2016-17 school year closed. The debate, however, over whether Hubbs was tougher as a coach or as a teacher may never end.
In some respects, Jim Hooper’s history classroom in Lupton Annex resembles a small home library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and a collection of bound Life magazines, remnants from the pre-internet years when students turned to books, periodicals, and journals for research.
Sandy Gardner grew up on Signal Mountain and has extensive family in the area, so there were more factors in his decision to return to Chattanooga than just the onerous Atlanta commute he navigated for 16 years while on the faculty of Westminster School. Whatever his reason for returning, Baylor has certainly been the beneficiary of that decision for the past 27 years.
Who better to tell the story of how Baylor’s community service program impacts lives than recent graduate Diamond Wadley ’17?
Folks who work in the offices of Baylor’s Hunter Hall miss the routine afternoon call for “Quittin’ Time!” jokingly announced by Rob Robinson ’68 at the end of many work days. Robinson retired from Baylor at the end of 2016, ending a successful 16-year career.
"Forward ever be our watchword, conquer and prevail." It’s no surprise that “forward” is at the heart of our alma mater. Since 1893, Baylor has led the way in preparing students to achieve extraordinary things in their careers, their communities, and their lives. We’re not slowing down now.

Garrison Conner ’05 and Takisha Haynie have been hired to lead Baylor’s residential life program.
When Mike Drew accepted a new position at the Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla., this spring, his decision to leave Baylor left a void much larger than his role as the Middle School head.

A Message from the Head of School
When I learned that the theme of this issue of Baylor magazine was the many forms of legacy, my thoughts leapt to several facets of institutional life at Baylor where that word means so much. From family heritage through which multiple generations of students bearing the same last name are represented in our student body to the Forever Forward capital campaign donors who will make a difference in the school’s future, Baylor is the beneficiary of extraordinary legacies of all kinds.
