Holden Sweeps at State Meet, Upshaw High Jump Champ

Simon Holden pulled off the rare sweep of distance events (800, 1600, and 3200 meter runs) and Reggie Upshaw won the high jump championship at the state track and field meet Friday night at MTSU. Holden is only the second Baylor runner to win all three distance events at the state meet joining Bill Matthews.
Baylor finished sixth as a team behind champion Brentwood Academy, MBA, Christian Brother, Briarcrest, and McCallie.
Holden, a junior, won the 800 in 1:55.38, the 1600 in 4:25.35, and took the 3200 meter run in 9:38.43 for 30 team points for the Raiders. Upshaw, also a junior, added 10 more points clearing 6' 4" to become the high jump champion.
Also for Baylor, Patrick Bryant finished a strong third in the 400 meter run, Alex Sumida was fourth in the 800, and Matthew Oellerich added a seventh place pole vault finish to his seventh in the decathlon.
The Baylor 4 X 800 meter relay team of Elias Garcia, Sumida, Will Raines and Bryant was second, the 4 X 400 team of Bryant, Raines, Jeff Bowens, and Holden finished fifth, and the 4 X 200 team of Joey Rogers, Bowens, Landry Taylor, and Upshaw turned in a seventh place finish.
