Giving Profiles

Tripp Womack ’73 and Doug Monroe

Occupations:
Tripp (pictured right) is President and CEO of Saber Resources in Midland, Texas, and Doug is the Managing Director of Chesapeake Strategic Advisors, LLC in Richmond, Va.

Their Gift:
Led effort to secure funding for Lupton Circle renovation in memory of Henry Allen Corey, Jr.

What is the story behind the memorial?
TRIPP: Allen and Maddin Corey’s son was struck by a sudden illness. Everyone still thought he’d make it, but he died the next day. Their daughter, Meredith, took her first steps at her brother’s funeral.

DOUG: Allen was the first of our age group to get married. Young Allen was the first baby born, and his death was one of the most shocking events in my life.

Why did you get involved with this project?
DOUG: Allen, Tripp, and I were in the same fraternity at UNC. I gave because of our friendship.

TRIPP: Allen and Maddin have more friends than you could imagine, and we wanted to do something for them.

What part did you play in the establishment of the memorial?
TRIPP: I coordinated with Matt Lewis at Baylor and talked to the many people we knew outside of Baylor who loved the Coreys. We raised money from all the old fraternity guys and others from our Chapel Hill days. The memorial is extremely meaningful to Allen and Maddin.

DOUG: I was not equal to Tripp or some of the others in what I contributed. But I personally gave, and I worked to secure funding from corporations.

Why did you choose Baylor and not UNC as the site for the memorial?
DOUG: It is clear how much Baylor means to Allen. This was the most appropriate thing that the school could have done. This memorial means so much to the many people at Baylor whose boat was rocked by Allen’s death.

TRIPP: Baylor stands for so many things that matter, and it is a smaller and tighter community. The Corey family has been involved with and associated at Baylor in a positive way for a very long time.
