What are the roots of your Baylor involvement?
I just love Baylor. Growing up in Chattanooga, I knew I wanted to go to Baylor ever since I was 10-years-old. I went to Baylor in seventh grade and then my family moved to Atlanta. I went to Westminster for one year but I missed Baylor so much that I boarded at Baylor for the next four years.

Why do you think alumni should give to the Annual Fund?
This is not a very difficult question. They went there. It was a great school at the time and we want it to stay a great school.

How do you feel about making calls?
I had a list of names of former classmates or people either one or two years ahead or behind me. I enjoyed calling. We had good instructions about what we were supposed to do. We also had good motivation—we could win Baylor blankets and other items—and we had a lot of fun.

What is your philosophy of asking for a gift?
It is important to go for 100% participation among alumni. If you achieve something even close to that goal, it tells you what people think of the school. It shows that we’ve got something. We reached so many people this time but there are still many alums out there who haven’t been contacted. Lots of single, double and triple digit gifts with close to 100% participation would be a great thing. I think that (Director of Annual Giving) Susan Johnson and (Director of Alumni Programs) Rob Robinson are really cranking up the effort and it keeps getting better. Baylor should have a tremendous impact from the terrific job they both do.

Any thoughts about the coming year at Baylor?
Jack Stanford has always been my mentor. I first met him when I was 11 or 12 and he was in charge of summer programs. Before the summer was over, Dr. Barks had hired him as a teacher and I have known him since. I have good feelings about Dr. Stacy. I think he understands the rhythm of Baylor and I am optimistic about what is ahead.
