Emmet O'Neal Scholarship

Criteria & Qualifications
The Emmet O'Neal Scholarship was created for a child, stepchild, or grandchild of an O'Neal Steel employee, and potentially represents $140,000 over four years. To be considered for nomination students should:

  • Be a ninth or tenth grade student in the fall of 2008 and unable to attend Baylor School without this scholarship
  • Demonstrate academic excellence, breadth of interest, and extracurricular involvement.
  • Exhibit leadership skills and must have made a positive contribution to some group or cause and should show the promise of remaining committed to these personal standards.
  • Have a GPA of 3.7 or higher and be among the top ten percent in a Baylor approved national test.

Nomination Process

  • Candidates will be asked to provide a personal narrative about a time in their lives when they either exhibited strong character or assumed a leadership role.
  • Each nomination must be accompanied by three letters of recommendation, two from teachers and one from a non-teacher.
  • Each candidate will then be interviewed.

Please note that applications are due by May 31, 2008. An important goal of this new initiative is to make the process extremely individualized, relaxed, and personal for each family. Baylor’s admission counselors will guide you through the various steps and deadlines involved in the application process, so your experience will be one of exploration – not anxiety.

Emmet O'Neal, 1921-2004

Emmet O'Neal grew up around the steel business and through his leadership his family's business, O'Neal Steel, grew to be the nation's largest family-owned metals service center. A 1939 graduate of Baylor School, Emmet was known in his hometown of Birmingham and the national business community for his wisdom, humor, integrity, vision, and leadership. He also cared deeply about his extended family of employees at O’Neal Steel. As part of his legacy, the Emmet O’Neal Scholarship has been established for qualified children, stepchildren, or grandchildren of O’Neal Steel employees. The scholarship will provide full tuition and costs associated with attending Baylor as a boarding student.
