Criteria & Qualifications
The Emmet O'Neal Scholarship was created for a child, stepchild, or grandchild of an O'Neal Steel employee. The scholarship covers the cost of the student’s boarding tuition as long as he or she is remains an exemplary member of the Baylor community. Only one student carries the scholarship at any given time.
The scholarship honors the memory of Emmet O’Neal. A 1939 graduate of Baylor School, Emmet was known in his hometown of Birmingham and the national business community for his wisdom, humor, integrity, vision, and leadership. Ideally, the O’Neal scholar will exhibit similar potential through his or her demonstrated academic excellence, breadth of interest, and extracurricular involvement.
To be considered for the scholarship, students must be nominated by someone other than themselves and must complete and submit an application for admission along with the supporting materials set forth in the admission application section of the Baylor website. The student must also visit campus and participate in a conversation with a Baylor admission counselor.
Preference will be given to students entering 9th grade, although students in 10th and 11th grades are eligible as well. Preference will also be given to students who would not be able to attend Baylor were it not for this award. Consequently, families of students wishing to be considered for the award must also complete a financial aid application through SSS/NAIS.
Note: Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) rules mandate that any student receiving financial aid totaling more than the family qualifies for will be ineligible to play TSSAA-sanctioned varsity sports. Consequently, a student receiving the O’Neal Scholarship would be ruled ineligible if they qualify for anything less than aid equal to the full tuition.
Application
Please note that applications are due by May 31. An important goal of this new initiative is to make the process extremely individualized, relaxed, and personal for each family. Baylor’s admission counselors will guide you through the various steps and deadlines involved in the application process, so your experience will be one of exploration – not anxiety.
